Think debtor prison is a thing of the past?

Well, you might want to check a little more into exactly how much trouble your pile of debt can cause you.

In the early 1800s it was fairly common for people to go to jail for not paying their debts.  Wikipedia says that about 2,000 New Yorkers annually went to debtor’s prison in 1816.

That’s quite a few folks considering that the population of New York wasn’t nearly as large back then as it is today.  Of course, we aren’t living in the 1800s anymore.  However, you can still find yourself sitting behind bars for not paying your bills if you aren’t careful.
