IT’S a rare and stunning sight: the vibrant colours of a rainbow dazzle against a waterfall… in the middle of the night.
The amazing display – a “moonbow” – is produced when light is reflected off the surface of the moon onto droplets of water, creating vibrant arcs of colour. The spectacle occurs just a few times and year and can only be seen when the conditions are just right.
The Yosemite National Park in California, US, is one of the few places on earth that travellers can catch a glimpse of the phenomenon and staff have produced a video detailing the elusive spectacle.
Moonbows glow against the park’s waterfalls whenever there’s moonlight in spring, however they are most easily seen when the moon is nearly full.
